Best ways to introduce New Vocabulary.

“Without grammar little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”.  Hi everyone, today’s topic is vocabulary. Vocabulary is one of the most important skills in teaching and learning a foreign language. Students usually find it difficult to speak English fluently, they need words in order to express themselves. They consider speaking and writing activities boring because they use the same words and expressions every time and some missing words interrupt their conversations. And the reason for this is the lack of vocabulary. So the point is, the more words students learn, the easier they memorize them. 

 Teacher has an important role in helping the students to improve their vocabulary. But what can we do as teachers to help our students improve their vocabulary and make use of new words? What activities can we use? Well, nowadays there is more freedom in choosing what methods to use during English classes. There are a lot of strategies that will help you to make the most out of vocabulary instruction. First of all keep the students READING. That’s the most important step, because they will encounter a lot of words through reading. So let’s provide students with a reading comprehension just to encourage them to improve independent reading. Secondly, don’t be boring. Don’t do the same thing over and over again. So, switch up your teaching strategy and keep the students interesting to the lesson.  This gonna be better for you, right ?

Another important characteristic is that you should HELP all learners. This means that you have to use a variety of practice activities. Not all students would respond to “write a story using 3 vocabulary words”. Just think about Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, you remember, right? Offer various ways to practice, because by doing so you would reach all learners. Then, REVIEW. As you add new words every week don’t forget to review. Bring back words that the students have already learned. Doing so will help them make a connection between the words or even lessons.  

Learning is remembering. Memorization is crucial in teaching vocabulary. One strategy for memorization is music. Actually music has always been a great tool to help with memorization. It allows students to memorize at their own pace. Also, word maps help students learn new words by associating it with its synonyms, antonyms, writing the definition or even using the word in sentences. Word maps activities help students think about vocabulary in several ways, and make connections with each word in relation to other words they already know. 

Vocabulary instruction doesn’t have to be a challenging part of lessons anymore. All the above mentioned tips are very important in teaching vocabulary and actually i hope that you find them useful for you and your students.

    Hi Elena! I really enjoyed reading your blog, as it stresses out the importance of vocabulary and some very helpful methods how to teach it. The very first sentence you have used in this blog is very meaningful and true and a little secret (I have used it in my blog too). I think all teachers should keep that in mind and never neglect vocabulary.
    Furthermore, I liked it that you have mentioned the multiple intelligences, because we should never forget we are teaching different students, with different skills, interests and most importantly, intelligences. A very good job! :)

DDD-E Model and Constructivism

Hi everyone!  This week i have another interesting topic for you. Constructivism and DDD-E model.   DDD-E model - each letter stands for a specific definition. Decide - Design - Develop - Evaluate  The Decide stage focuses on the determination of program objectives and materials through analysis of PBL development needs. Design stage shows the design structure of the program. And the Development stage includes production and media programming.
